Ideas: Chronological, Most to Least (money, participants, served), Least to Most, Simple to
Complex, Most Controversial to Least controversial (doesnt really apply here)
One more tip on organizing your thoughtswrite it down, at least have good notes. Most of the
WORST speakers Ive ever heard (including myself), were winging it.
Rounding Second - 10 minutes
So we have an idea about how to organize our thoughts, so lets round second kick off our speech
with a powerful opening.
An effective opener should: (reveal newsprint)
1.
Sell the audience on listening.
2.
Introduce the topic.
3.
Establish credibilityintroduce you, the speaker!
Who can tell me some tips for creating an effective openerwhat are some of the things that we do
want to use in our opening? (Post on half of newsprint)
What are some things we dont want to use in our opening? (Post).
Flying Past Third - 10 minutes
So, youve made it to third base. Youve organized your speech and youve astounded them with
your opening. Now, we want to do everything we can to help the listeners hear, absorb, and
remember our talking points.
Call forward a volunteer. Give him/her a picture of a stick man. Ask him/her to give directions to
the group to replicate the picturewithout saying stick man and without using hand gestures.
Listeners must follow the directions literally and exactly. When finished, allow the speaker to give
the same speech, letting him/her draw the figure on newsprint while speaking.
What does this activity demonstrate about public presentations? (people misinterpret things, you
should be clear, visual images make things much clearer).
